Hilla Becher (1934-2015)

 

Bernd Becher studied painting and lithography at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart from 1953 to 1956, before focusing on typography at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1957 to 1961. Hilla Becher studied graphic and printing techniques at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1957 to 1961. The two artists first collaborated in 1959 and married in 1961. They were given their first gallery exhibition in 1963 at the Galerie Ruth Nohl in Siegen. Major retrospectives include the Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; Museum Folkwang, Essen; Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Paris; Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Liège, Liège; Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur, Cologne; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York. Awards include the Erasmus Prize (2002), the Hasselblad Award (2004) and the Großer Kulturpreis (2014).
