We are pleased to announce Smokes of Anomy, a vision by Awol Erizku at the Bronx, 1338 Franklin Ave, #1C, New York, NY 10456

This exhibition features new sculptural works which are comprised of found objects that synthesize Awol's connections to both African as well as African American culture, popular culture, and art history. The compositions are created from a vernacular of symbols that invoke a multitude of cultural references simultaneously, ranging from trap music to modern and contemporary art masters (such as Noah Purifoy,John Outterbridge & David Hammons), to spirituality and gun violence. As an amalgam of cultural and personal signs, that too reflects the hybrid nature of his biography and practice, each work is loaded with implicit meaning in order to challenge the historical problem of inclusion (that prioritizes certain voices over others) as well as avoid the pitfall of being pigeon-holed as an artist who favours one medium over another. They are a provocation that urges the viewer to ultimately explore and define the work for themselves.
The exhibition will continue at Colnaghi, 38 E 70th Street, New York, NY 10021, by appointment only, powered by Ben Brown Fine Arts.
