VIK MUNIZ at Frieze Sculpture Park 2019

3 July 2019 - 6 October 2019

The Regent's Park

Vik Muniz’s Mnemonic Vehicle No. 2 is a life-size sculpture of the iconic 1973 Jaguar E-Type Matchbox toy car. This body of work represents a return to the sculpture of Muniz's early career and is a project about memory, desire and scale.

The sculptures began with vintage Matchbox cars collected by Muniz, which were digitally enlarged, reproducing every scratch, ding, and chip. From this digital file, the sculptures were produced using cutting-edge techniques of the automotive prototyping industry. These ‘cars’ speak the lingua-franca of desire and desirability and explore definitions of masculinity and the yearning to be prosperous. This work is the touchstone for a story that gets at the root of why we are obsessed with these mnemonic devices that remind us of the pleasures of childhood and its fleeting moments of satisfaction, power, speed, and control.

Frieze Sculpture will return to The Regent’s Park for three months this summer, featuring works by artists presented by world-leading galleries. Selected and placed by Clare Lilley (Director of Programme, Yorkshire Sculpture Park), Frieze Sculpture will create an exceptional cultural attraction at the heart of the city, for Londoners and international visitors alike.
