Overview

Anselm Kiefer studied at the University of Freiburg before attending art academies in Freiburg, Karlsruhe and Dusseldorf. Solo exhibitions have been organised by the Royal Academy of Arts (RA), London (2014); Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao (2007); Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (1998); Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin (1991); Kunsthalle Düsseldorf (1984); and Art Institute of Chicago (1987). Kiefer has received numerous awards including the Berliner Bär (B.Z.-Kulturpreis) (2011); Merit Cross 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (2005); and Japan's Praemium Imperiale (1999). In 1997 he won the International Prize at the 47th Venice Biennale. Public collections include the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York; Guggenheim Museum, New York; Tel Aviv Museum of Art; Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; and Tate, London.
