As a child exploring the mountains of his native Mallorca, Miquel Barceló encountered prehistoric caves and burial sites whose ancient walls left a lasting impression. In Potro de Rabia y Miel (1992), that memory resurfaces: ochre, black and white pigments conjure the primal energy of cave art, the animal forms emerging from the layered ground. The work echoes the timeless mark-making of early human expression.
The present work relates directly to the album cover Barceló designed for the late flamenco singer Camarón de la Isla. Potro de Rabia y Miel, released in 1992, was the last album issued during the singer’s lifetime. This painting was most likely an alternate design for the cover, distinguished by its denser impasto and rawer surface texture – qualities absent from the final version.
