In his Pictures of Diamonds series, Vik Muniz considers both the cultural history and physical splendour of diamonds. He refers to the ‘A Diamond is Forever’ campaign of 1947, launched by N.W Ayer and Son for De Beers, positioning diamonds as timeless symbols of love and commitment. The campaign successfully associated diamonds with eternal romance and shaped cultural perceptions. To make the works, Muniz arranged thousands of gemstones on black velvet to recreate publicity portraits of famous Hollywood actresses, drawing a parallel between the glamour of these iconic stars and the radiant appearance of the glittery stones. However, the arrangement of gemstone refuses the viewer access to the subject internal world, rather, projects a superficial, reductive image, reflecting the inherent hollowness of these luxury objects.
