This lyrical suite of four Chaises Ginkgo epitomises Claude Lalanne’s unique synthesis of nature-inspired art and functional design. These sculptural chairs transform natural forms into structures that are not only visually captivating but also offer an elevated sense of comfort. Drawing inspiration from the distinctive fan-shaped leaves of the ginkgo tree, Lalanne demonstrates her ability to fuse organic elegance with practical craftsmanship. The ginkgo, a symbol of longevity and resilience, serves as an evocative motif, reflecting Lalanne’s lifelong fascination with the beauty and variety found in the natural world.

Created initially in 1996, the design for the Chaises Ginkgo embodies Lalanne’s continuous exploration of transforming flora into artistic expressions. The series reflects her capacity to meld decorative art with functionality, an approach that defined her career. With their delicate yet robust forms, the chairs blur the line between fine art and utilitarian object, illustrating Lalanne’s mastery in elevating everyday items into objects of wonder. The present suite, completed between 1997, 2008, and 2014, is crafted in aluminium, a material that lends a contemporary edge to the organic inspiration. This choice of medium enhances the lightness and durability of the chairs, contrasting the intricate detailing of the ginkgo leaves with the industrial finish of the metal.

Though the ginkgo tree is native to East Asia, Claude Lalanne grew the species at her home in Ury, France. Her personal connection to the plant brought a sense of intimacy and authenticity to the design, as each chair captures the delicate curves and textures of the leaf with meticulous attention to detail. The result is a piece that feels at once timeless and modern, embodying the natural form while transcending it through an artistic lens.

Executed in limited editions of patinated bronze, gilt bronze, and aluminium, the Chaises Ginkgo series is a testament to Lalanne’s versatility in exploring different materials while retaining the inherent character of her designs. This set, comprising four chairs from an edition of eight plus four artist's proofs, showcases Lalanne’s continual refinement of the model. The works numbered #7/8E, #7/8F, #7/8G, and AP 3/4C, provide collectors with an opportunity to own a complete suite from one of the most celebrated series in the artist's oeuvre.

In the context of Lalanne’s larger body of work, this suite of Chaises Ginkgo stands out as a significant contribution to her enduring legacy. The chairs exemplify her ability to breathe life into inanimate objects, transforming nature into art that is not only decorative but also deeply functional. Lalanne’s dedication to capturing the essence of organic forms continues to resonate within the spheres of both fine art and design, ensuring that her works maintain their relevance and allure across generations.
