In Africa, I had worked on modelling the human skull but had not considered that clay shrinks between % and % when drying. My skull had become that of a child! I first tried to glue large ears on it (as the Dogon people say that the dead listen), but it was dreadful. It looked like Dumbo. In the end, I modelled the pointed nose of Pinocchio and that ended up working. Someone once told me that the nose was the lie that remains after death.
