Considered one of the most significant contemporary figurative painters, Peter Doig has developed a body of work that incorporates ethereal landscapes, art historical references and pictorial memories. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1959, Doig grew up between the island of Trinidad and Canada. In 1979, he moved to London and studied at the Wimbledon School of Art (1979-80), St. Martin’s School of Art (1980-83), and Chelsea School of Art (1989-90). In 1990, Doig won the prestigious Whitechapel Artist Prize, resulting in a solo exhibition at Whitechapel Gallery, London (1991). Doig has had solo exhibitions at Tate Britain, London (2008); the Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh (2013); and Fondation Beyeler, Basel (2014). His work is included in major private and public collections internationally, such as the Art Institute of Chicago; Sammlung Goetz, Munich; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and Tate Modern, London. Doig currently lives and works in Trinidad.
