PAMM Acquires José Parlá’s HOMECOMING (Before Time, the First Migrations) for its Permanent Collection

We are pleased to announce that José Parlá’s monumental work HOMECOMING (Before Time, the First Migrations), the titular painting from his recent exhibition at Pérez Art Museum Miami, has been acquired for the museum’s permanent collection.

This important acquisition represents a significant institutional recognition of Parlá’s practice and of a work that engages deeply with the geography and layered histories of Miami, reflecting the city’s enduring connections to Caribbean and Latin American diasporas. Conceived in Parlá’s Brooklyn studio and completed through a series of live painting sessions within the museum, HOMECOMING (Before Time, the First Migrations) establishes a dynamic dialogue between artist, space, and audience.

Curated by Maritza M. Lacayo, Associate Curator at PAMM, the exhibition extended the museum into the artist’s studio, creating an immersive environment in which gesture, materiality, memory, and music unfolded in real time. The acquisition further situates Parlá within a generation of leading contemporary painters whose work bridges personal history, urban experience, and collective memory with clarity and depth.
